Style Revolution
For Vanessa Carreno, women of a hundred years ago aren't so different from those of today. Especially the soldaderas of Mexico, who became brave soldiers in an age that still had strict expectations of femininity.

Carreno is a Mexican-born, Los Angeles-based designer whose collection is inspired by the Mexican Revolution of 1910. "They were always feminine but very strong at the same time," she says. "And I like the idea of setting up a contrast of delicate fabrics in feminine cuts against straps and fasteners that are rugged and solid." Carreno, also likes to combine different fabrics weights, with leather and unlikely combinations. For Vanessa Carreno, women of a hundred years ago aren't so different from those of today. Carreno studied fashion design in Mexico and Milan before graduating from FIDM in Los Angeles. She then took employment at a sportswear company before launching her own line several years ago. But because the trademark was unavailable, she re-launched her line under her own name last fall during the Mexican Fashion Week.

Her line has suddenly become a in demand line and went on to participate in the Design Suites at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios earlier this spring. Carreno was one of seven designers that were chosen to be featured in the recent FBI event, Vindulgence – LA; sponsored by Wente winery and Tiara Café, and the New Mart Building. “We wanted to highlight both new and established LA designers who produce locally in our show. Vanessa has created a new look with fresh ideas and interesting fabric combinations,” Said Frances Harder, FBI’s executive director.

Her recent collection consists of separates and coordinates. Price range is better contemporary range: wholesale $90-$400.
