FBI, PAD Get Pattern Makers on the Path to Automation

PADComputer-aided design (CAD) has become a lifesaver for apparel pattern makers, especially since the emphasis on speed to-market has become almost a mandate in the global marketplace. Not everyone is taking advantage of CAD, however, as manual pattern making is still commonly practiced in many cutting rooms across the Los Angeles Fashion District and beyond.
The incubator agency Fashion Business Inc. of Los Angeles hopes to help steer a few more toward automation as it launches an ongoing series of CAD training using the PAD System, produced by PAD System Technologies, based in Montreal with its North American headquarters located in the FBI, PAD Get Pattern Makers on the Path to Automation

Getting the Jump on Tech With FBI, AIMS

A second group of students received certification in AIMS’ software programs from the Fashion Business Inc. as a part of a free training program for apparel industry workers.


The 96-hour course was made possible by a $49,000 earmark grant from the California Department of Labor.
“The state recognizes that apparel industry needs training-and retraining,” said Frances Harder, president and founder of FBI.
The program is a joint effort between several agencies. FBI applied for the Department of Labor grant, supplied the necessary grant paper work and provided the venue. AIMS provided the education and support. The city of Los Angeles-affiliated Community Career Development Inc. provided recruitment and screening services.

FBI, AIMS Help New Workers Get Up to Speed

Los Angeles-based Fashion Business Inc., with assistance from the U.S. Department of Labor, has launched a new program aimed at training a more computer-literate apparel industry workforce.

FBI graduated the first group of workers, who took advantage of a free, 96-hour, eight-week certification course on AIMS, a computer-based order-entry and data-management system for apparel companies.

The Labor Department financed the program through a grant, and FBI and AIMS provided the education and support. The city of Los Angeles-affiliated Community Career Development Inc. also assisted in providing recruitment and screening service.

Designers Head to Hong Kong with FBI

2005’s Influential 20

Fashion Business Inc. has continued to provide industry-specific seminars to new apparel businesses, helping them to take creative ideas, and turn them into thriving fashion companies that can navigate potential minefields, such as department-store charge backs and new technologies.
In 2005, FBI offered a new twist. It took its message on the road. Frances Harder, president founder of FBI, has given monthly seminars in San Francisco and San Diego. By 2006, up-and-coming apparel manufacturers will be able to take advantage of the same seminars that have been popular in Los Angeles.
